Suspended Gait Training

Before we talk about the Suspended Gait Training, let's first look at what Gait Training is.  According to Wikipedia, "Gait training or gait rehabilitation is the act of learning how to walk, either as a child, or, more frequently, after sustaining an injury or disability."

In Physcial Therapy, Gait Training is used after an injury or any condition which affects your ability to walk.  It can be used for general weakness, after a stroke, and various neuromuscular diseases.  It can also be used after surgery and for amputees with new prosthetics.

The Physical Therapist is not just teaching you how to walk.  You are being taught how to walk correctly throughout the phases of gait.  You are assesed at your current level, a Plan of Care is developed and goals are set specific to your needs.  You may use assistive devices during your Physical Therapy for Gait Training.  These can include a walker, cane, parallel bars, gait belts etc.  And some of these will be used in conjunction with the Suspended Gait Training.

SUSPENDED GAIT TRAINING SYSTEM (SGTS)

What's the difference?  With our SGTS, you are connected to a 40' track & trolley system suspended from the ceiling.  Our SGTS holds up to 2000 pounds.  The pulley system and adjustable harnesses make it an easy fit for all, allowing obese and very tall patients to safely gait train as well.  It is adjusted to your height/build.  Once you are secured, you are able to Gait Train without the fear of falling, which is often a hinderance to patients moving forward in Physical Therapy.  Once patients realize the safety the SGTS provides, they feel more comfortable and can particpate in therapy more out of their comfort zone.  This can faciltate a quicker recovery and an earlier discharge from Physical Therapy.

If this didn't answer all of your questions, please give us a call at 225.644.0290.  We will be glad to give you more information.  Or you can make an appointment to come by & see our SGTS for yourself.  An appointment will be required during this Phasing in after the Novel Coronavirus and COVID 19.  No Drop-Ins at this time.  We apologize for any inconvienence.  Also, our protocols for entering the building must be adhered to.  Check out our return video on Facebook for more details on our response to COVID19 and our reopening.  https://www.facebook.com/118275788336728/videos/678899779572662
