Let's talk about Direct Access again. Many still do not recognize the term or know what it means. Most important is understanding what it means for you to be able to get Physical Therapy. Simply stated it means you can get Physical Therapy without a doctor's order. Did you know that? This will save you money and time. You no longer have to set up a doctor's appointment to get a referral. You can simply call the Physical Therapy clinic of your choice and set up an appointment. For someone in pain, a decreased wait time means a lot.
We still have to abide by your specific insurance plan's requirements. But generally they are more on board now. Most don't require the referral or pre-authorization. Usually a certain number of visits is automatically approved as long as it is deemed "Medically Necessary". Some will require authorization after a pre-determined number of visits. Every plan is different.
According to the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board, "On June 6, 2016 Senate Bill No. 291, amending the Louisiana Physical Therapy Practice Act found at La. R.S. 37:2418 et seq., became law allowing patients direct access to physical therapy. This law is effective as of June 6, 2016".
If you haven't shown measurable improvement within 30 days, the Physical Therapist is required to refer you to your physician or other appropriate healthcare provider.
So what are you waiting for?
